OFFICIAL: Africa Cup of Nations to be played between June-July
The African Cup of Nations is set to be moved to the summer, between June and July, after the agreement to the CAF Executive Committee’s proposal.
Starting from the 2019 African Cup of Nations in Cameroon, the tournament will be played between the months of June and July and will continue to take place every two years.
The decision will receive wide approval from all European clubs that include African players, who would typically leave midway through the season to represent their countries in the AFCON, and may end up getting injured.
This resolution was agreed among a set of proposals that included the expansion of the AFCON teams form 16 to 24 teams, as many major changes are expected to take place in the continent’s football, according to CAF’s newly-elected president Ahmad Ahmad.
