Salah scores as Liverpool beat Leicester City to win Premier League Asia Trophy
After beating Crystal Palace in the semis of the tournament, Liverpool played the final against Leicester City, a team who had just defeated Egypt’s Ahmed Hegazi and West Brom to reach the finals. Jurgen Klopp selected Salah to start, fielding an almost full-strength squad that might resemble his plans for the team.
Leicester City and Algerian international Islam Slimani opened the scoring in the 12th minute, hitting home a header off a cross from Christian Fuchs.
Salah equalised in the 20th minute after combining with Coutinho on a brilliant one-two play. Salah passed it to Coutinho and began his run into the box before Coutinho chipped the ball over Leicester defenders, allowing the Pharaoh to head the ball into the net past Kasper Schmeichel.
This was Salah’s second goal in two preseason friendlies, having scored in the semifinal against Crystal Palace.
For the rest of his time on the field, Salah had been making impressive interplay with his teammates, at points even impressing the fans in Hong Kong.
Just before halftime, Coutinho added the second in the 44th minute, scoring an almost trademark goal that we have seen so often of him. The Brazilian cut inside on his right foot and fired it into the far corner, leaving Schmeichel stranded.
Salah was subbed off in the 65th minute to a standing ovation from the fans. Klopp wanted to field many inexperienced youngsters to give them some game time. The match finished 2-1 and it was Liverpool who won the Premier League Asia Trophy.
