Elmohamady assists as Aston Villa lift Cup of Traditions
Elmohamady’s Aston Villa have won the Cup of Traditions after defeating Germany’s MSV Duisburg and Hertha Berlin on Sunday.
The Cup of Traditions is a summer pre-season tournament hosted by MSV Duisburg, with all matches last just 45 minutes. The competition features a number of European clubs including Bundesliga outfit Hertha Berlin, Spanish side Málaga, Aston Villa and MSV Duisburg themselves.
The Egyptian made his first start in claret and blue against Duisburg and assisted Villa’s second goal of the game. Youngster Andre Green opened the scoreline in the 21st minute, then Scott Hogan scored Villa’s second goal three minutes later after a great ball from Elmohamady.
Hogan killed off the tie when he scored the third goal in the 36th minute, guiding his side to the final game, where they faced Hertha Berlin who beat Málaga 2-1.
The team was completely changed for the final, but that didn’t stop Villa from lifting the trophy. New signing Christopher Samba scored the opener against his former side through a header from Henri Lansbury’s corner. Man of the match Gabriel Agbonlahor added the second in the 30th minute, sealing a 2-0 victory for the Villans.
Meanwhile, hosts MSV Duisburg claimed the third-place after beating Málaga 1-0 thanks to a Simon Brandstetter goal in the 9th minute.
Steve Bruce’s men will complete their preparations against Arminia Bielefeld at FC Gütersloh’s Heidewaldstadion on Tuesday July 25, before facing Watford in a Graham Taylor Tribute encounter at Villa Park.
