VIDEO: Zamalek concede late equaliser in 2-2 draw with Morocco’s FUS

Egyptian giants Zamalek were held to a 2-2 draw after conceding late against Moroccan side Fath Union Sport (FUS) in their Arab Club Championship opener on Sunday.

Against the run of play, the Moroccan side opened the scoring at Alexandria’s Borg El-Arab Stadium after eight minutes through Ivorian midfielder Lamine Diakité.

The White Knights were unlucky as they lost Ahmed Refaat to injury, with Ibrahim Abdel-Khalek coming on to replace him on the quarter-hour mark.

Moruf Yusuf almost equalised for Zamalek midway through the first half but his shot went wide. Bassem Morsi, however, levelled the score from the penalty spot just before halftime.

FUS were looking to regain their lead in the second half and Diakité had a chance to score seven minutes after the break but Zamalek keeper Ahmed El-Shennawy produced a fine save to keep the scoreline at 1-1.

Ten minutes after coming on to replace Ahmed Tawfik, Hazem Emam assisted Mahmoud ‘Shikabala’ Abdel-Razik who put Zamalek ahead. The 31-year-old winger sent a powerful shot following a cross from Emam to make it 2-1.

The White Knights attempted to add a third goal in an effort to seal off the victory but failed to threaten the Moroccan side. Diakité then grabbed a last-gasp goal to complete his brace and give his side a 2-2 draw.

Earlier on Sunday, the other Group B game between Saudi Arabia’s Al-Nassr and Al-Ahed from Lebanon ended in a 1-1 draw. Zamalek will face Al-Ahed on Wednesday before concluding the group stage against Al-Nassr on Saturday.
