Zamalek lose 1-0 to Al Ahed in Arab Club Championship

>Zamalek XI: Omar Salah; Hosni Fathi, Ali Gabr, El-Wensh, Hazem Emam; Ibrahim Salah, Moruf, Hamed, Shikabala; Mostafa Mohamed, Paulo.

In a tame first half, Zamalek’s first chance came twenty minutes in, with Mostafa Mohamed having a great chance to put the White Knights on top, but his shot missed the target. The youngster was replaced 20 minutes later by signed-again Ibrahim Abdel-Khalek, presumably due to injury.

Al Ahed dominated possession in the first half but were not able to dangerously threaten Omar Salah’s goal.

To start the second half, Moruf Yusuf was replaced by Dunga. Paulo should have put the home side in front a minute into the second half, but his effort found only the side netting. Omar Salah then saved his defenders’ blushes by thwarting an open Al Ahed header.

With five minutes left in regulation, Al Ahed finally put a goal away. Second half substitute Dunga was sent off one minute later, and Zamalek were not able to find a leveler.

The loss puts Zamalek in third place in their group, behind Al Ahed and Fateh Union of Morocco. Zamalek will finish group stage play on 29 July against Al Nassr, who languish in last place on goal differential.
