EXCLUSIVE | Giorgos Donis turns down Zamalek, joins APOEL

Giorgos Donis
Veteran Greek manager Giorgos Donis has turned down an offer from Cairo club Zamalek in favour of a move to Cypriot giants APOEL Nicosia.

Former Al Hilal boss Giorgos Donis turned down an official offer from Zamalek to head back to Cyprus.

Donis, 47, was open to a move to Zamalek if they were to pay a fee just north of €1 million per season, but the White Castle’s board were not able to excede the $900,000 mark.

It is believed APOEL have offered the coach $600,000 per season and despite the sum being less than what Zamalek had offered, Donis decided to join the team which he had won the league and cup double with in the 2013/14 season.

Donis had previously enjoyed a fruitful spell with Saudi Arabia giants Al Hilal where he managed to win the King’s Cup, the Crown Prince Cup & the Saudi Super Cup in the 2015/16 season.

It is worth noting that Zamalek had contacted Cameroon manager Hugo Broos who also turned down the club’s offer.
