Al Ahly crash out of Arab Championship after Al Faisaly defeat
Al Ahly have been eliminated from the Arab Championship after losing 2-1 to Jordanian side Al Faisaly.
Al Ahly’s first chance came in the third minute when Azarou set up Hamoudi but his shot was saved by the Al Faisaly goalkeeper. Only two minutes later, Hamoudi was in the middle of the play once again when he fell inside the penalty box, but the referee waved penalty calls away.
Another chance went the Red Devils way when Maaloul sent a cross into the box, but it was cleared by Al Faisaly’s defense before it reached Ajayi. In the 25 minute and across the run of play, the Blue Eagles took the lead when Dominique headed in a cross past El Shennawy.
Azarou had Al Ahly’s best chance of the half when he went 1-on-1 with the goalkeeper, but his resulting shot went wide. Al Ahly were punished for their missed chances again only two minutes later when a cross was deflected into goal by Ahmed Fathi.
At the beginning of the second half, Ahmed El-Sheikh was substituted in for Ahmed Hamoudi. Azarou once again went close, but his header was saved by the goalkeeper. El Sheikh then tried his luck from distance, however it went wide of goal.
Abdallah El-Said replaced Hossam Ashour as Al Ahly tried to shake things up. Saleh Gomaa hit the post minutes later with a left foot drive.
In the 87th minute, a clear handball by a Al Faisaly defender raised penalty calls for Al Ahly, but the referee denied them the call. In the final seconds of the game, Azarou scored his first goal for Ahly off a rebound.
