Pharaohs Abroad Roundup: Sam Morsy captains Wigan to win league opener

Sam Morsy – Wigan Athletic (England)
August 5 – League One – Only one day after being named as Wigan’s captain, Sam Morsy has led his side to a 1-0 win over MK Dons, thanks to Nick Powell’s 38th-minute goal in their League One opener. A player from each side was shown the red card for two separate incidents, as Wigan’s Callum Elder was sent off right before the break while Scott Wootton of MK Dons was dismissed around the one-hour mark. Morsy was booked for a foul in the 22nd minute.
August 8 – EFL Cup – Wigan booked their spot in the second round of the EFL Cup after defeating Blackpool 2-1 on Tuesday. Coach Paul Cook started the game with his academy players and rested his regular starters including captain Sam Morsy. Wigan scored two first-half goals through Josh Laurent and Jordan Flores while Armand Gnanduillet’s headed effort pulled one back for Blackpool on the one-hour mark.
Ahmed Elmohamady – Aston Villa (England)
August 5 – EFL Championship – Egypt international Ahmed Elmohamady played the full 90 minutes as Aston Villa were held to a 1-1 draw against Elmohamady’s former team Hull City. Veteran winger Gabriel Agbonlahor, 30, gave his side an early lead as he opened the scoring after seven minutes only. However, his goal was cancelled out by a Jarrod Bowen strike at the one-hour mark as the game ended with both teams sharing the spoils in their league opener.
August 9 – EFL Cup – Aston Villa progressed to the second round of the EFL Cup after earning a 2-1 win over Colchester. Steve Bruce rested John Terry, Gabriel Agbonlahor, and Ahmed Elmohamady, as he provided a number of youngsters some playing time. Scott Hogan opened the scoring for Villa after seven minutes. Frankie Kent then scored an own goal before reducing the deficit five minutes before halftime.
Omar Gaber – Basel (Switzerland)
August 10 – Swiss Super League – Egypt international Omar Gaber remained on the bench as Basel defeated Grasshoppers 3-2. Basel took the lead after Taulant Xhaka’s cross got deflected by Milan Vilotic into his own net in the 29th minute. Ricky van Wolfswinkel doubled Basel’s lead just before half time and completed his brace after scoring from the spot on the one-hour mark. Lucas Andersen reduced the deficit for Grasshoppers with 20 minutes to go before Vilotic made it 3-2 seven minutes later. Basel now sit third with nine points and their next match is against FC Wettswil-Bonstetten in the Swiss Cup on August 13.
