Taher: Al Ahly participated in Arab Championship for political reasons
Al Ahly president Mahmoud Taher has revealed that his side participated in the Arab Club Championship for political reasons.
The Egyptian Premier League champions relied on a second-string side in the tournament and rested a number of key players including Saad Samir, Sherif Ekramy and Momen Zakaria.
The Reds qualified from their group as the best 2nd-placed-team and were knocked out in the semi-finals after losing to Jordan’s Al Faisaly 2-1.
“We didn’t aim for the Arab Club Championship title, but we have gained a lot of positives from participating in it,” Taher said on Saturday.
“The club participated in the tournament for political reasons, there were some technical reasons as well. We now have two teams that can compete for two separated tournaments,” he added.
The Red Devils next game will be against Smouha in the Egyptian Cup semi-finals on Wednesday, August 9 at 20:00 CLT at Borg El-Arab stadium.
