Esperance Sportive de Tunis crowned Arab champions
Esperance Sportive de Tunis were crowned Arab champions after beating Al-Faisaly SC in the competition’s final match held in Alexandria, Egypt.
Al Faisaly made it through to the finals after defeating Cairo giants Al Ahly at Borg El-Arab stadium, while the Tunisian side managed to beat Morocco’s Fath Union Sport 2-1 .The Tunisian side defeated Al-Faisaly 2-3 on Sunday after the match went to extra time. Esperance were also awarded $2.5 million for winning the trophy.
The first half of the game ended 0-0 with equal domination and rare chances from both sides. However, this changed completely in the second half after Esperance’s Saad Bguir scored two goals in the 47th and 54th minutes making it harder for the Jordanian side to return to the game.
Yet, Al-Faisaly did not surrender and managed to come closer to Esperance when Akram Zuway scored his team’s first goal in the 71st minute. The Amman-based club did not stop threatening Esperance and their efforts were successfully translated into an equalizer in the 88th minute taking the game to extra time.
The Tunisian side managed to finish the game in the first half of the extra time scoring their third goal in the game after 101 minutes to snatch the trophy for the third time in their history after winning the championship in 1993 and 2009.
