Al Ahly ease past Smouha to reach Egypt Cup final

Egypt Cup

Al Ahly defeated Smouha 4-0 in the Egypt Cup semi-final at Borg El-Arab Stadium, thanks to goals from Junior Ajayi, Walid Soliman and Saleh Gomaa.

Al Ahly started the game with their usual 4-2-3-1 formation which gave them the upper hand in the opening minutes of the game against Smouha’s cautious 4-4-2. Seven minutes into the game, the Red Devils almost scored from an easy tap-in by Ahmed Hamoudi that was just inches wide of the post.

Smouha maintained a low defensive line just a few meters far from the penalty area in an attempt to maintain their clean sheet, but that didn’t last long, as Junior Ajayi opened the scoring seven minutes before the half-time whistle. The Nigerian striker scored an intelligent chip shot following a pass from Hamoudi.

Two minutes later, Walid Soliman scored Al Ahly’s second of the game after a decent back heel pass from Ajayi, as the former sent a shot from the edge of the box that took a deflection off a defender and went into Mohamed Abou Gabal’s net.

Frantisek Straka’s side didn’t seem motivated enough to change their overly protective style of play into an attacking one or at least try to score and keep their chances alive.

Meanwhile, Al Ahly kept on pressing throughout the second half and managed to reach Smouha’s goal after just 10 minutes of the restart. Soliman completed his brace after an assist from Abdallah El-Said with the former going went one-on-one with the keeper and slotting the between his legs.

Ten minutes later, substitute Saleh Gomaa scored a carbon copy of Walid’s goal and nutmegged the keeper for the second time in the game which was enough to knock Smouha out of the cup and send Al Ahly to the final.

The Red Castle, who are bidding for their first Egypt Cup title since 2007, will face Al Masry in the final. The game will be held on Tuesday, August 15 at Alexandria’s Borg El-Arab Stadium.
