Elneny assists as Arsenal clinch thrilling opening day win over Leicester City

Arsenal fought back from behind twice to grab a late 4-3 victory over Leicester City in a thrilling Premier League opener on Friday.

The first 15 minutes were very lively with both teams having equal chances on goal. Alexandre Lacazette gave the Gunners an early lead after he opened the scoring in the second minute. Egypt international Mohamed Elneny sent a cross that was met by Lacazette, who headed the ball beyond Kasper Schmeichel.

However, Arsenal’s lead didn’t last long as Shinji Okazaki hit back with a header only three minutes later after Harry Maguire nodded the ball back into the box. The guests capitalised on the abundant mistakes from Arsenal players and their sloppy defending as Jamie Vardy eventually made it 2-1 from Marc Albrighton’s cross around the half-hour mark.

The hosts’ defense looked vulnerable and Leicester got stronger and grew more confident as the match approached half-time. Danny Welbeck, however, levelled for Arsenal on the stroke of half-time after being teed up by Kolasinac.

The guests needed only 10 minutes to regain their lead after the restart as Vardy headed in Riyad Mahrez’s cross to score his side’s third goal and complete his brace.

Elneny was subbed off for Aaron Ramsey in the 67th minute after playing a decent game. Olivier Giroud and Theo Walcott also came on to replace Rob Holding and Danny Welbeck.

Arsene Wenger’s substitutions inspired the Gunners’ comeback as substitute Ramsey fired home with seven minutes to go to level the scoreline. Only two minutes later, Giroud completed Arsenal’s comeback as he scored what proved to be the match winner from Granit Xhaka’s corner.

Arsenal’s next match will be away against Ramadan Sobhi’s Stoke City on August 19 at 18:30 CLT.
