Aston Villa manager Steve Bruce revealed that Ahmed Elmohamady might have to undergo surgery after picking up an injury in Saturday’s 3-0 defeat to Cardiff City.

Elmohamady who was included in the starting line up was subbed off injured for Albert Adomah after just 31 minutes as he picked up a mouth injury after a collision with Cardiff City goalkeeper Neil Etheridge.

The English coach said that the Egypt international may require surgery and will miss the Villans’ upcoming trip to Reading in the third round of the EFL Championship on Tuesday

“He’s got a mouth injury that might need surgery. He won’t be available for Tuesday,” Bruce said.

The 56-year-old manager acknowledged the impact of the 29-year-old winger, saying his side looked “fragile” after Elmohamady was forced off.

“Once Elmohamady went off with an injury we looked fragile.

“They continually broke on us and I don’t know how many times our goalkeeper pulled us out of the mire.”

The Lions went into half-time with a 1-0 deficit after Nathanial Mendez-Laing opened the scoring for the Bluebirds in the 20th minute. The hosts then doubled their lead through Junior Hoilett on the one-hour mark before Mendez-Laing completed his brace 20 minutes from time.
