Klopp explains his team selection against Crystal Palace
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has revealed the reason that Mohamed Salah was dropped from their starting lineup against Crystal Palace this weekend.
The 50-year-old German has said that the decision was to build up Daniel Sturridge’s fitness following a small injury he picked up in a friendly against Bayern Munich.
“Offensively, Daniel is back and that’s good news”, he said. “I think it makes sense after a very good period pre-season then a short break with a little muscle thing that we bring him in immediately and try to use his quality.”
Klopp may have also had one eye on the upcoming Champions League qualifier against Hoffenheim in midweek, which Liverpool will go into holding a 2-1 lead with an away goal advantage.
Salah was not the only regular starter to be rested this weekend, as Lovren, Can, Alexander-Arnold and Moreno were all dropped from the starting lineup of Liverpool’s first two games of the season.
Despite playing a weakened team, the Reds managed to win 1-0 despite Palace causing them several problems in recent years, most notably in the 3-3 draw in 2014.
Liverpool’s next game is against Hoffenheim in the Champions League, while their next Premier League game is at home against Arsenal on August 27 where Salah may meet his compatriot Mohamed Elneny.
