Bidvest Wits coach speaks about Amr Gamal capture
Bidvest Wits coach Gaven Hunt praised the signing of Egyptian international striker Amr Gamal from Al Ahly on a one-year loan deal.
Gamal will be the first Egyptian player to play for a South African side after the deal was announced on Tuesday. The striker will compete with the likes of James Keene, Gabadinho Mhango and Eleazar Rodgers for a starting spot in the Students’ lineup. Interest for the loanee started last March when Bidvest Wits and Al Ahly met in the CAF Champions League.
“That’s why I say that the Champions League helps us. I saw him play against us twice. And I just took a shot in the dark with my CEO – I said ‘Can we do something?’” Hunt said during the press conference. “He’s a player that can help us. He’s an old-fashioned No.9. I like those type of players. He can create goals‚ he can score goals.”
Gamal is a product of Al Ahly’s youth team and was promoted to the first team in 2013. He managed to lift three Premier League titles, two Egyptian Super Cups, one Egypt Cup, the 2013 African Champions League, the CAF Confederation Cup in 2014 as well as two CAF Super Cups in 2013 and 2014.
Hunt pointed out the player’s experience with the Red Castle assuring that such experience will help the team tremendously especially because Gamal played for Al Ahly since he was a young boy.
