Women’s Afrobasket: Egypt qualify for quarter-finals despite loss
The Pharaohs managed to qualify from their group after winning against DR Congo and Guinea and losing to Nigeria and Senegal. They will join Nigeria, Senegal and Mozambique in the quarter-finals, which will be played on Friday, August 25.
Egypt started the game poorly, losing the first two quarters 10-21 and 12-22. They were then able to win the third-quarter 26-25, but before unfortunately losing the fourth-quarter 13-25 and the game 61-93.
Despite the loss, the Pharaohs qualified for the quarter-finals after Mozambique defeated DR Congo 52-42, as the highest point tally possible the latter can get is six, while Egypt have already six points and the lowest point tally they can get is seven [Teams get two points for winning and one for losing].
Egypt’s remaining game will be against fourth-placed Mozambique on the 23rd of August and the win will clinch Egypt the third place, which might get them an easier opponent in the quarter-finals.
The 2017 Women’s Afrobasket is being held in Mali from 18 to 27 August. The winners and runners-up will be qualified for the 2018 Women’s Basketball World Cup, which will be held in Spain in September 2018.
