VOLLEYBALL: Egypt beat Poland, finish third in group
The victory over Poland means that the young Pharaohs will compete for the fifth place for the first time in history, as Egypt never occupied a place between the first and eighth post in the U-23 world championship.
Marcos Miranda’s men started the game strongly winning three successive sets 15-13, 15-7 and 32-30, before a short regression after losing the fourth set 13-15. Egypt then finished things off in the fifth set, winning it by 15 points to 13.
The hosts finished in the third place of Pool A with eight points, behind leaders Brazil and Cuba, who reached the tournament’s semi-finals, after collecting 14 and 10 points, respectively.
The Pharaohs are set to face China on Thursday, with the winner expected to meet the victor of Japan and Iran clash in the fifth place decider match.
