OFFICIAL: Al Ahly sign Bidvest Wits winger Phakamani Mahlambi
The Red Devils have agreed a deal worth close to $1.3 million to sign the South African international from Premier Soccer League champions Bidvest Wits after the EFA agreed to increase the foreign players per team to four instead of three.
Mahlambi has attracted interest from a host of top clubs across the world including Benfica and Galatasaray as well as African champions Mamelodi Sundowns, but Bidvest opted against selling him to a domestic rival.
The 19-year-old is the most recent recipient of the South African Premiership Young Player of the Year award and he will become the first South African player in Reds’ history.
Mahlambi is considered one of the brightest young talents in South Africa. He helped Bidvest winning their first ever PSL last season, scoring six goals and assisting further seven in 16 appearances.
Overall he scored 10 goals and assisted 10 times in 32 appearances across all competitions since his arrival at Bidvest Wits.
Mahlambi made his international debut against Angola in a friendly in March 2017 and has failed to represent his country since then.
