Jurgen Klopp blames Liverpool midfield for Man City defeat
Mohamed Salah has settled down so quickly at Liverpool and made an instant impact on the team since joining them in the 2017 summer transfer window as he produced impressive performances in his first five official matches he played with the Reds.
However at the Etihad Stadium, his side were in shambles after an early red card to Sadio Mane and a cruising 5-0 victory to the hosts on Saturday.
That was the heaviest ever defeat for Jürgen Klopp as a manager and also the first time since 1958 that Liverpool had been beaten by such a scoreline.
Klopp was asked if Otamendi was spotted as a weakness in his battle with Mohamed Salah along the right flank, he answered: “Spotted? That’s not too respectful, for everybody in the world, it’s difficult if you cannot avoid a pass. That’s how defending works.
“You have to avoid the pass, because in the end Otamendi cannot make Salah slower.
“If we can play the pass, then Salah is away. That’s not Otamendi’s fault. That’s how I see it. That’s why you need to be compact and avoid passes like this.
“And if players are properly defending in midfield (you have a better chance) – we are usually much better at that than we were against City,’’ he added.
It’s worth mentioning that Mohamed Salah was taken off at half time by Jürgen Klopp, who replaced him with new signing Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.
Liverpool’s next match will be against Sevilla in the Champions League on Wednesday, September 13 at Anfield.
