Amr Gamal: Mahlambi is a very good player

Amr Gamal praises Phakamani Mahlambi

Bidvest Wits striker has stated that new winger is a very good player and revealed that the player was close to moving to Portugal.

Gamal joined Bidvest from Al Ahly on loan with a buyout option at the end of the season, while Mahlambi moved the other way on a permanent deal.

The Egypt international, who scored a goal in Bidvest’s 3-1 defeat to Golden Arrows on Wednesday, revealed that the South African midfielder had offers from clubs in Europe before he completed his move to the Red Castle.

“I trained with Phakamani and Al Ahly’s interest started after the game against Bidvest last season. He had offers from Besiktas and Benfica but he was not lucky to get his move to either of the two clubs,” Amr Gamal told DMC Sports.

Al Ahly played against the South African side in the CAF Champions League earlier this year, beating them 1-0 at El-Salam Stadium before playing out a 0-0 draw at Johannesburg to qualify for the group stage.

“He is a very good player and is well known here [in South Africa] and he is very young. He was very close to joining one of the big Portuguese clubs but I don’t really know what happened.

“Afterwards, Al Ahly decided to re-initiate talks with Bidvest for the player, who were very welcoming. Mahlambi will benefit Al Ahly a lot and he is improving, I wish him luck,” he added.
