Mahmoud Taher ‘optimistic’ ahead of Al Ahly clash with Esperance

Al Ahly chairman Mahmoud Taher
chairman is optimistic ahead of his side’s clash with Esperance in the second leg of the quarter-final of the CAF Champions League.

The first leg at Alexandria’s Borg El-Arab Stadium last week saw Al Ahly settle for a disappointing 2-2 draw. The Red Devils now face an uphill task, as they need to win or at least draw 3-3 with the Tunisian side at Stade Olympique de Radès when they meet in the second leg on Saturday.

Taher spoke about his side’s shortcomings in the previous game, saying the Cairo giants wasted a lot of scoring opportunities. He also discussed the officiating errors in the match.

“I just wish that the refereeing would be fair on Saturday because I believe that it will play an integral role in the game,” Taher told OnSport satellite channel.

“The players are focused on snatching a win in Rades. They don’t need any sort of motivation because they know the importance of defending Al Ahly’s history.

“I’m optimistic and confident of our ability to overcome this difficult match,” the 65-year-old chairman concluded.

Al Ahly manager Hossam El-Badry announced on Wednesday a 25-man squad for the team’s trip to Tunisia, which will the record eight-time African champions fight for a spot in the semi-final of the competition they last won in 2013.
