CAF change referee for Al Ahly clash with Étoile du Sahel
The Red Devils are set to host Étoile du Sahel at Borg El-Arab stadium in the return-leg of the semi-finals on Sunday, October 22 after losing the first-leg 2-1 in Sousse.
CAF first appointed South African referee Daniel Bennett to officiate the game, before replacing him with compatriot Victor Gomes due to Bennett’s poor refereeing performance during Uganda’s clash with Ghana in the World Cup qualifiers.
The Ghanaian FA have lodged a complaint to FIFA about the performance of Daniel Bennett, asking for a rematch of their game against Uganda, which ended it a 0-0 draw.
The South African referee ruled out two fair goals by Ghana’s Thomas Partey for offside, as well as denying them a clear penalty.
In the first half, Partey headered in from a free kick into the bottom corner only to see the linesman raise his flag and chalk it off.
As the Black Stars pushed for a winner all game, it seemingly came in the 94th minute with the Atletico Madrid midfielder latching onto a rebound from a shot from distance. Again, it was ruled out for offside.
