Hector Cuper comments on Saleh Gomaa and attacking tactics
Egyptian national team manager Hector Cuper spoke after Egypt’s win against Congo, about Saleh Gomaa, his attacking tactics and the team’s striker situation.
After Egypt’s 2-1 win over Congo, which saw Egypt qualify to the world cup for the first time since 1990, Egypt’s manager spoke in an interview with Egyptian satellite channel On Sport, about Saleh Gomaa replacing Abdallah El Said, his attacking tactics and his thoughts on who can fill the striker’s position.
Cuper commended Saleh Gomaa saying, “He [Gomaa] played a very good first half against Congo but I can’t ask him to do all of Said’s duties”.
“Gomaa can offer a huge deal of what Said offers but not in the same way that Said presents it as both players have different specialties”. He went on to say that both players “could possibly play together.”
When talking about his attacking tactics Cuper defended his style of play saying ,”people should be asking why don’t we attack with more players, which is the correct question”.
He added that, “It is possible that four well positioned defenders stop any number of attackers, but in the end we attack at the right time and in our most suitable way”.
Finally, Cuper said that Egypt doesn’t have a problem in filling the striker role saying that “we have 4 or 5 players that can play in that position”.
Ho concluded by saying: “We succeeded in giving Egypt its spine back, we face Ghana in the next international break and we have a friendly match. It is possible to include players that don’t play regularly and to fit them in our system while maintaining the balance between them as we try players in different roles.
Egypt will face Ghana in the final round of the African World Cup qualifiers in November. The draw for the World Cup will take place December 1st.
