El Shaarawy: Egypt’s World Cup qualification historic, Salah great player
Roma winger Stephan El Shaarawy has considered Egypt’s qualification to the 2018 World Cup in Russia ‘a historic moment’, disclosing a small story behind the scenes between him and Mohamed Salah.
El Shaarawy, who is of an Egyptian descent, was strongly sought by Egyptian Football Association officials and Egyptian youth national teams’ coaches to get him capped with the Pharaohs, but the former Milan player opted to represent Italy where he was born and nurtured.
The 24-year-old attacker was a guest in a live Q&A session on Roma’s Facebook page, and he mentioned Egypt and Salah’s most recent major achievement.
“It was a historic moment for the national team and I’m really pleased for Momo Salah. He was the driving force behind the team,” El Shaarawy said.
“I will tell you a little story. When I scored a brace against Udinese, he [Salah] wrote me a message to say well done on the two goals, so when he got his brace the other day I wrote to him straight away to say that I’d brought him good luck. I am delighted for him because he’s a great player and a top guy. I am really pleased.”
Egypt have finally made their hoped-for return to the World Cup after a 2-1 victory over Congo.
