VIDEO: Nigeria’s Junior Ajayi scores as Al Ahly defeat Ittihad of Alexandria
Al Ahly started the game with fierce determination to take an early lead and in the 6th minute Ajayi set up a great cross to Ahmed Hamoudi, but the Ittihad defenders managed to clear the ball.
Moroccan forward Walid Azarou then came close to opening the scoring on the 20-minute mark, however, his shot was saved by the Alexandrian side keeper El-Hany Soliman from a close range.
The young Moroccan forward continued to disappoint the Al Ahly fans as he wasted another huge chance to break the deadlock following an inaccurate pass to Hamoudi.
Al Ahly pressure paid off one minute before the break as Ajayi gave the Red Devils the lead after finishing the ball into the back of the net from a close range.
Ten minutes after the restart, Hamoudi’s header hit the bar following an accurate cross from Saleh Gomaa, before Ajayi’s follow up went wide.
Al Ahly’s performance dropped mid-way through the second half with Ittihad coming close to scoring the equaliser 15 minutes from time. However, Manucho’s curling effort went inches beside Sherif Ekramy’s left bar to keep the Red Devils’ 1-0 advantage.
Few minutes after Ittihad’s chance, Hussein El-Sayed doubled Al Ahly’s lead, as his powerful right-footed shot hit the back of Ittihad’s net to seal the victory for the Red Castle.
To rub salt into the wound, Ittihad’s Hesham Shehata was shown a red card in the additional time after a violent conduct against Walid Soliman.
Following the win, Al Ahly occupy the 13th league spot with four points from just two games, while Ittihad of Alexandria sit ninth with six points from five games.
The Cairo giants are set to face Al-Raga’a on October 16, while the Alexandria-based side will face Entag El-Harby on the 19th.
