The other semi-final will be an all-Egyptian tie as Ali Farag will be up against fellow Egyptian Omar Mosaad. Farag defeated Egypt’s Fares Dessouky 3-2 [10-12, 11-5, 8-11, 12-10, 11-8], while Mossad beat Peru’s Diego Elías 3-1 [11-6, 6-11, 11-7, 12-10].
Meanwhile in the women’s tournament, Egypt’s Nour El-Tayeb produced an upset as she managed to knock out world No. 1 Nour El-Sherbini in an all-Egyptian clash. El-Tayeb defeated her compatriot in a four-game [13-11, 5-11, 11-5, 11-7] and will face England’s Laura Massaro in the semis.
World No.3 Raneem El-Weleily has also reached the semi-finals after beating World No.5 Nouran Gohar, also in four games [11-13, 11-7, 12-10, 11-5], to reach her fourth U.S. Open semi-final in six years.
El-Weleily will face New Zealand’s Joelle King after the latter knocked out England’s Alison Waters 3-1 [11-9, 8-11, 11-2, 11-3].
