Hossam Hassan: Egypt can cause an upset at World Cup
Egypt’s legendary striker Hossam Hassan thinks that the national team will be able to perform well in the 2018 World Cup in Russia next summer now that players are not pressured to secure qualification.
The Pharaohs have one match remaining in the qualifiers against Ghana after they successfully booked their place in the 2018 World Cup after beating Congo 2-1 at Borg El-Arab Stadium.
“The conditions the team faced in the World Cup qualifiers were very hard since all national teams in the group were aiming to secure a ticket to the tournament which will be different from playing in Russia,” Al Masry coach told CBC TV channel.
For this reason, Hassan believes that Egypt can shine in the World Cup as the team will be affected positively given the different conditions they will be exposed to in Russia. He also thinks that the current generation will surpass the achievements made by the last Egyptian team that reached the world cup in 1990.
“Finally, in the World Cup, the players will not be under pressure to win every game like how it was in the qualifiers, all of this will help Egypt glow,” he added.
The 51-year-old coach, who scored Egypt’s goal against Algeria in 1989 that led the national team to reach the World Cup in Italy a year later, also spoke about the pressure Mohamed Salah faced in this match before scoring a last-gasp penalty that earned the Pharaohs their qualification.
“I sympathized with Salah during this moment,” he said. “But Salah was the only player capable of handling this situation due to the expertise he acquired playing in the English Premier League and the Seria A.”
