Egypt’s Farag, El Tayeb win US Open titles to write names into sports history
Egypt’s Nour El Tayeb and Ali Farag won the 2017 U.S. Open Squash titles to become the first married couple in history to win the same major sports title on the same day.
In an all-Egyptian final, El Tayeb defeated Raneem El Welily 3-2 (8-11, 11-4, 5-11, 11-7, 11-5) in 52 minutes in the women’s final on Saturday, before Farag earned a 3-0 (12-10, 11-9, 11-8) victory over Mohamed El Shorbagy in the men’s final a few hours later.
This marked the first PSA World Series titles for the Egyptian couple, who got married last summer.
“I’ve been dreaming about it and working really hard for the last two and half years,” El Tayeb, who currently sit 14th on the world rankings table, said.
“I’ve been improving every single tournament – it feels amazing to back-up wins against top four athletes – it’s amazing and I hope this is just the start.
“As soon as I finished my match, I just wanted to watch him and I was so nervous. It’s a dream – I see him every day working hard so it feels really special that both of our first World Series titles happen to be together,” the 24-year-old added.
Meanwhile, Farag, who occupy the fifth spot in the men’s rankings, expressed his happiness after their victories, saying it feels like a “dream”.
“We couldn’t have asked for a better week and I hope it’s the first of many to come together,” the 25-year-old champion said.
“It’s a good omen when she plays before me! It was a rollercoaster of emotions but I think I dealt with it really well and I couldn’t be happier!”
