Egypt sit in third pot ahead of 2018 World Cup draw
Egypt national team maintained their 30th position in the FIFA World Rankings position for the month of October after booking their World Cup qualification ticket.
Despite maintaining their international ranking, The Pharaohs dropped to second place in the African rankings as Hector Cuper’s men lost the lead to Tunisia after the North African team jumped three positions settling in the 28th position globally.
Right behind Egypt is Senegal in the 32nd position, followed by the Democratic Republic of the Congo 35th and Nigeria 41st. The new rankings also meant that Egypt lost its lead among Arab countries to Tunisia.
Egypt is now in the third class of the global rankings after placing 30th. FIFA will hold the World Cup draw in December after the final round of the qualifiers. Qualified teams will be distributed in four pots, with eight teams being allocated in each pot. Nations participating in the tournament will be put in pots based on the FIFA ranking of October. Pot 1 will include seven nations besides the hosting country Russia.
Egyptians had made it to into the Top 20 in March, after reaching the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations final. They moved up one place to the 19th in April before dropping to the 24th in July. They dropped another spot in August to sit 25th and continued sliding down in September as they dropped to the 30th.
