VIDEO: Al Ahly stroll to 4-1 victory over Al Ragaa ahead of Etoile clash
The defending champions controlled possession early in the first half and it took only seven minutes for midfielder Ahmed Fathi to put his side up with a powerful shot from outside the box following an assist from Nigerian forward Junior Ajayi.
Tunisian left-back Ali Maaloul came close to doubling Al Ahly’s lead on the 15-minute mark but his shot was saved by the Al Ragaa goalkeeper.
Five minutes later, Ajayi recorded his second assist in the game, sending a perfect pass to Mo’men Zakaria, who sent the ball at the far post.
Al Ahly then lost veteran midfielder Hossam Ashour to injury on the half-hour mark and he was replaced by Mohamed Naguib. It’s still unclear whether Ashour will be available for the Etoile encounter.
Ajayi got his own name on the scoresheet at the stroke of halftime. Moroccan forward Walid Azarou went one-on-one with the keeper but decided not to shoot, passing the ball to Ajayi who slotted easily in the empty net.
Less than 10 minutes after the restart, Al Ragaa scored their first goal of the league campaign through Ahmed Said Okka. However, only five minutes later, defender Saad Samir scored a great volley off of Saleh Gomaa’s corner to make it 4-1 for the Cairo giants.
Two minutes from time, Zakaria’s shot hit the crossbar preventing him from completing his brace and scoring Al Ahly’s fifth goal of the match.
The result brings Al Ahly to seventh place with seven points from three games.
This marked the Red Devils’ last game ahead of their crucial encounter against Etoile Sportive du Sahel in the second leg of the CAF Champions League semi-final on Sunday. The record eight-time African champions Al Ahly, who last won the tournament in 2013, are set for a tough task at Borg El-Arab stadium after suffering a 2-1 defeat in the first leg.
