CAF appoint Ethiopian referee for Al Ahly’s clash with Wydad in Alexandria
In 2013 he was the man in the middle when Al Ahly played against Club Bizertin in the first leg of the second round of the CAF Champions League. The game ended in a 0-0 draw and Al Ahly went on to win the competition.
Tessema has recently been appointed for two matches for Wydad. The most recent being their 1-0 loss in the first leg of this year’s CAF Champions League quarterfinal matchup against last year’s champions Mamelodi Sundowns. He also was the referee as Wydad beat ZESCO United 2-0 in last year’s group stage match in Morocco.
Tessema has also refereed for Egypt three times as they beat Tanzania in AFCON 2017 qualification, Botswana in AFCON 2015 qualification, and Guinea in the World Cup 2014 qualifications. He also refereed for Morocco in their 1-0 loss in AFCON 2019 qualification against the reigning champions Cameroon.
Al Ahly reached the CAF Champions League final for the first time since they last won in 2013 after an impressive 7-4 on aggregate win over Étoile du Sahel. Wydad Casablanca have reached the final for the first time since 2011 when they lost to Étoile du Sahel.
The first leg of the final will be played in Alexandria on Saturday October 28.
