Preview: Egypt travels to Ghana in final qualifier for the World Cup
Egypt defeated Congo 2-1 last month to qualify for the World Cup for the first time in 28 years, winning their qualification group with a game remaining.
While the results of games like this are not important, there are many players who will be trying to prove to Hector Cuper why they should be selected to his coveted 23 man squad that’s going to Russia this summer.
Cuper took control of the National Team when they were in a poor position. The side missed out on the 2014 World Cup in Brazil as well as three straight AFCON tournaments. In just a few years, Cuper took Egypt to the AFCON final where they lost to Cameroon and has now qualified for the 2018 World Cup in Russia. Making Egypt one of the top teams in Africa.
This game has little meaning for Ghana, but the players will be treating it as a team building exercise. Ghana goalkeeper Richard Ofori has called his teammates to prevail and defeat Egypt in their match.
The Black Stars will be missing out on some star players such as Atsu and Gyan who have sustained two thigh injuries and did not recover in time, meaning Ghana will be without the experienced duo against Egypt.
Atletico Madrid midfielder Thomas Partey, Jonathan Mensah and the Ayew brothers were other noticeable omissions from the squad.
Egypt on the other hand also will be missing key players. As Premier League stars Mohamed Salah and Ahmed Hegazi will be missing, aswell as Mohamed Abdel-Shafy.
These absences will create openings and opportunities in the squad for other players to develop and prove to Cuper they deserve a spot. For example, Ahmed Hassan “Kouka” will be looking to end his National Team goal drought. Smouha’s Mohamed Hamdy Zaki and Shikabala have been called up to the squad.
