Stephan El Shaarawy reveals reason for not representing Egypt
AS Roma Italian-Egyptian winger Stephan El Shaarawy spoke about why he preferred to join the Italian national team over Egypt.
El Shaarawy came in Italy’s play-off match with Sweden which the Azzurii lost 0-1 on aggregate failing to reach the FIFA World Cup for the first time in 60 years.
On why he favored playing for the Azzurri instead of the Egyptian national team, El Shaarawy told Dream TV channel: “I started playing for Italy when I was 14 years old, I was born in Italy and I felt that I wanted to continue my career with this team. I took this decision when I first started playing with the Italian youth team and then made it to the first team.”
“Hany Ramzy, Egypt youth team coach, came to Italy and asked me to join his team back then, but like I said, I was a player for the Italian youth team and my decision was to continue playing for them,” he added.
The young forward also spoke about former Egyptian teammate Mohamed Salah saying that they had a connection with him since they first met in Roma because Salah is a simple person and a great football player, which made it easier for them to get along.
“I am very happy for Momo and for the Egyptian national team after they managed to qualify to the World Cup,” he added. “When I scored against Udinese Salah sent me a message congratulating me.”
