VIDEO: Sherif Osman wins gold at World Para Powerlifting Championships
Egypt’s Sherif Osman won the gold medal at the World Para Powerlifting Championships in Mexico City on Sunday.
The three-time Paralympic gold medalist won gold at the Juan de la Barrera Gymnasium after lifting 205kg in the 59kg category. Iran’s Amir Jafari Arangeh lifted 187kg to finish in second place, while his compatriot Seyed Yousefi won bronze after lifting 182kg.
Osman went into the competition as a favorite as British powerlifter Ali Jawad decided to lift down in the 54kg category. The 35-year-old Egyptian is yet to have lost at a major international competition, having also claimed gold at two World Championships in 2010 and 2014.
Osman is a three-time Paralympic gold medalist as he won gold in Beijing 2008 Paralympic Games after lifting 202.5 kg in the 56kg category. He also clinched the gold medal in London 2012, winning Egypt’s first gold medal of the Games as well after lifting 197 kg.
At the Rio Olympics, Osman decided to move up to the men’s up to 59k category and managed to win gold, setting a new world record of 211kg, almost four times his body weight.
Another Pharaoh earned a medal at the World Para Powerlifting Championships on Sunday as 2010 World Champion Gehan Hassan lifted 125kg to win the bronze in the women’s 86kg category.
