Zamalek progress in Egypt Cup after win over Haras El-Hodood
The struggling Zamalek entered the match with seven changes from the lineup that started in the 1-1 draw against Al Ragaa.
After creating many chances in the opening minutes, Kabongo Kasongo scored the first goal against Haras El-Hodood after he slid in Ahmed Madbouly’s cross. It was Kasongo’s second goal in as many games after he scored the equalizer in the draw with Al Ragaa. He also scored Zamalek’s only goal against El Minya in the Round of 32 last month.
In the 34th minute, Haras El Hodood came closer to equalizing the game through Mohamed Gamal, but center-back Mahmoud Alaa made a crucial block to keep Zamalek’s lead.
Six minutes later, Razek Cissé, on his first start for the White Knights, was fouled inside the box by a Haras El Hodood defender. Syrian left back, Moayad El Ajan scored his second goal of the season from the spot to give Zamalek the 2-0 lead.
Haras El-Hodood began the second half well by forcing a save from Ahmed El Shennawy and a clearance from striker turned right-back Youssef Obama. Eight minutes in, El-Hodood had another chance through Ahmed Gamal but his header went wide of El Shennawy’s goal.
In the 75th minute, Mohamed Ibrahim scored his first goal since May 18, 2017 against Wadi Degla on what was his first start of the season to give Zamalek a 3-0 lead.
In the dying seconds of the match Kasongo had a great chance to put the last nail in the coffin, but his shot form a few feet went way high of El-Hodood’s goal.
Zamalek will return to the league on December 14 to play league leaders Ismaily. The White Knights are currently in fourth place with 19 points from 11 games, whereas Ismaily are in first place with 27 points from 12 games.
