Egypt’s Mohamed Eldib wins gold at World Para Powerlifting Championships

Egypt’s has claimed his first world title after lifting 221kg in the 97kg category at the World Para Championships.

Eldib, who won silvers at both Kuala Lumpur 2010 and Dubai 2014, was far from breaking his own world record of 243kg, but managed to win gold after lifting just 1kg more than United Arab Emirates’ Mohammed Khalaf.

Meanwhile Colombia’s Fabio Torres completed the podium as he had to settle for bronze after lifting 219kg in the third and final round.

Eldib previously won gold at the London 2012 and Rio 2016 Paralympic games, where he set a new record by lifting 237 kg on his final attempt.

On Sunday, Egypt’s Sherif Osman won the gold medal at the in the 59kg category after lifting 205kg and 2010 World Champion Gehan Hassan lifted 125kg to win the bronze in the women’s 86kg category.

World champion Randa Mahmoud will hopefully win another gold medal for Egypt when she is up against London 2012 gold medallist Loveline Obiji in the women’s over 86kg category on Friday.
