Raneem and Mohamed Elshorbagy clinch squash world titles in Manchester
Mohamed Elshorbagy made history with, his brother, Marwan Elshorbagy as the first siblings to reach a PSA World Championships final.
The first of the finals was the all-Egyptian women contest between Raneem El-Welily and Nour El Sherbini. El Sherbini was the reigning two-time world champion going into the meeting. This included a win over the same opponent in 2016.
She won the first set 11-3 but Raneem rallied back to win the final 3-1 in 43 minutes. She recorded scores of 12-10, 11-7 and 11-5 to seal a world title after losing in 2014 and 2016.
Elder brother wins
In the Men’s final, experience won the day. Marwan Elshorbagy, in his first PSA World Championships, was no match for his brother. Mohamed Elshorbagy was featuring in his third final.
He managed to win the tie 3-2, coming on top in the end despite his younger brother responding to his lead on two occassions.
Mohamed won the Men’s title with set scores of 11-5, 9-11, 11-7, 8-11 and the clincher 11-6. The 2017 PSA World Championships was held in Manchester, between the 8th and 17th December.
