Acheampong nets brace as Zamalek defeat Ittihad of Alexandria
This victory ended Zamalek’s three-match winless run after they lost to Ismaily, Misr El-Makassa and drew with Al Ragaa.
Zamalek masterfully gained control in the first minute of the game, with Ghanaian striker Benjamin Acheampong scoring a header following a corner by Syrian left-back Moayad Ajan.
Ittihad then had plenty of chances but lacked quality. On the 15th minute, Mohamed Nagy’s stunning shot almost went into Ahmed El-Shennawy’s net but the ball went inches above the crossbar.
In the 26th minute, Mohamed El-Alfi almost found the equaliser from the left edge of the box but El-Shennawy blocked it to maintain his side’s 1-0 advantage. Seconds before the halftime whistle, Abdallah Gomaa left the field injured and was replaced by Youssef Obama.
The second half witnessed more chances for Zamalek and they soon doubled their lead in the 57th minute. The Ghanaian forward, who joined Zamalek from Dakhleya during the summer, raced into a pass from Ahmed Madbouli and beat the keeper to complete his brace.
Few minutes later, Mohamed Nagy headed a nice shot but El-Shennawy continued to impress and blocked the ball to keep a clean sheet. Mohamed El-Shamy had a chance to make it 3-0 in the 75th minute but his shot went over the bar.
Following the win, Zamalek, who have a game in hand, now sit fourth on the league table with 22 points, nine points behind leaders Ismaily. They will next face Arab Contractors on December 26.
