Voting opens for 2017 African Player of the Year Award
CAF has announced opening of online voting to the general public to decide the winner of the 2017 African Player of the Year Award.
The African football governing body has made sudden alteration to its annual awards this year. First, it did away with the African-based player of the year award without giving clear reason.
CAF then decided to base awarding of the African Player of the Year Award on a public vote from 24th December, 2017. The names of the final three players shortlisted for the prize were released a week ago. 2015 winner, Aubameyang will vie for it alongside, Liverpool duo, Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah.
Team of the Year Award will also be determined by the same criteria. The public will vote for its preferred players in each position. CAF has gone with a 3-4-3 formation.
The voting will run from 24th December, 2017 to 2nd January, 2018 and will be conducted through CAF’s official website and its Facebook Page.
Winners will be unveiled at a Gala to be held in Accra, Ghana on 4th January, 2018. Salah and Mane have been given permission to attend despite an FA Cup Merseyside clash happening only a day later.
The CAF African Player of the Year Award was officially started in 1992. Salah is considered favorite to become the first Egyptian footballer to win the award.
