El-Shorbagy, El-Welily named PSA Players of the Month for December
The Egyptian squash duo obtained those titles after they were crowned World Champions in Manchester last month, which was their first World Championship title after they both finished as runner-ups in two previous occurrences.
Mohamed El-Shorbagy reached the finals in 2012 and 2014, and this year faced off against none other than his younger brother Marwan El-Shorbagy. Mohamed won the Men’s title with a score of 3-2 [11-5, 9-11, 11-7, 8-11, 11-6].
El-Shorbagy’s journey to the title was not an easy one, as he had to face three-time World Champions Ramy Ashour and Nick Matthew, and World No.1 Gregory Gaultier in earlier rounds. He has been in his best form this season, reaching every final and losing only the U.S Open to fellow Egyptian Ali Farag.
Simultaneously, Raneem El-Welily won the championship after overcoming fellow Egyptian and defending champion Nour El Sherbini.
This wasn’t the first time that the two come face to face, as they have played against one another in last season’s World Championship final, where El Sherbini came out victorious to win her second successive title.
Nevertheless, World No.2 El-Welily made sure that she would not be defeated this time around setting a 3-11, 12-10, 11-7, 11-5 victory at Manchester Central Convention Complex.
The 2017 PSA World Championships was held in Manchester, between the 8th and 17th December.
