Official: Mohamed Abdel-Shafy joins Al Fateh on loan
Al Ahli left-back Mohamed Abdel-Shafy has joined Saudi Pro League rivals Al Fateh on loan until the end of the season, the club announced on Thursday.
The 32-year-old has been omitted from the recent Al Ahli games by Ukrainian manager Serhiy Rebrov, despite being one of the prominent pillars in Al Ahli team last term through their league and AFC Champions League campaigns.
Nonetheless, the veteran left back failed to maintain the same role this season due to a drop of form and injury, which cost him his place in the team’s Asian Champions League squad.
The Egypt international made only two appearances with Al Ahli this season. And Ahli Jeddah president Prince Turki bin Faisal spoke late in December about the Egyptian’s lack of playing time, citing that “he needs to work harder.”
The former Zamalek player joined Al Fateh on a six-month loan deal, hoping to get consistent game time ahead of the World Cup in June. Al Fateh are in 10th place on the league table with 18 points after 16 gameweeks.
Abdel-Shafy joined Al Ahli on loan from Zamalek in 2014 before making his move permanent in the summer of 2015. He made 87 appearances with the club since then and helped them lift the league title in 2016, the 2015 Saudi Crown Prince Cup as well as the 2015/16 King Cup and the 2016/17 Saudi Super Cup.
