A penalty and the perfect Virgil van Dijk debut took Liverpool past their city rivals in the FA Cup as they won the  2-1.

It was the 24th FA Cup Merseyside clash, the most between any two sides in the competition’s history.

It was a peaceful first half for van Dijk as both team did not cause much threat at the Anfield stadium, until Mason Holgate took Adam Lallana down in the box, gifting the Reds a penalty that was successfully converted by Milner to end the first half 1-0.

As the second half kicked-off Lallana had a clear chance in front of Jordan Pickford but his right footed strike went wide.

Liverpool continued to dominate the game until an Everton corner found Phil Jagielka who passed the ball to Gylfi Sigurdsson bagging the Toffees’ equalizer and his fourth goal at the Anfield Stadium.

A clean sheet might have been ruined for Netherlands’ center-back, but the no 4 hit the ground running to make sure this is his perfect debut when he climbed above every Everton player at Liverpool’s following corner and slammed a header to make home fans grow mad making it 2-1 for Liverpool.

Liverpool go through to the next round, as they maintained their 16 games of unbeaten home derby record.
