Stoke suffer cup upset to Coventry

Phil Greig/ Stoke City

Stoke City have been eliminated from the by fourth tier , after having equalised thanks to a penalty won by Egypt international .

Coventry City XI: Liam O’Brien, Tom Davies, Jordan Willis, Chris Stokes, Jack Grimmer, Michael Doyle, Tom Bayliss, Jordan Shipley, Jordan Maguire-Drew, Marc McNulty, Maxime Biamou.

Stoke City XI: Jack Butland, Geoff Cameron, Kevin Wimmer, Kurt Zouma, Charlie Adam, Joe Allen, Stephen Ireland, Ramadan Sobhi, Thomas Edwards, Mame Diouf, Saido Berahino.

Stoke reached the final of the competition in 2011 under Tony Pulis, however have failed to progress further than the quarter final since then, and so many fans have been hoping for a good cup run especially in the light of their poor Premier League season.

There was a somewhat toxic atmosphere in the Ricoh Arena as several Stoke fans were vocal about wanting Mark Hughes to be dismissed as manager including some who had brought a large banner into the ground to make their feelings known.

Midway through the first half, it was the Sky Blues who opened the scoring as Jordan Willis found the net from close range to give Coventry a surprise lead.

Although Coventry held on until half time, the Potters went into the second half in search of an equaliser and were provided a lifeline when Ramadan Sobhi was taken down unfairly in the box before Charlie Adam converted from the spot.

Coventry have pedigree in the FA Cup, having won it in 1987, and they added another piece of history to the competition as Jack Grimmer found the bottom corner to give his side the lead, and despite Stoke bringing on big names such as Shaqiri and Choupo-Moting they were unable to equalise once again as Coventry won 2-1.

The result means that Coventry have progressed into the 4th round, joining fellow League 2 sides Yeovil and Notts County. For Stoke, while the focus is on Premier League safety this will only add more pressure onto Mark Hughes who is becoming increasingly likely to lose his job.

Stoke’s next game is away at Manchester United on Monday 15th of January.
