OFFICIAL: Aubameyang joins Arsenal from Borussia Dortmund
Gabon international Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has joined Arsenal from Borussia Dortmund for a fee understood to be around £60m, becoming the second most expensive African footballer.
The 28-year-old was prolific during his time at Dortmund, scoring 141 goals and registering 36 assists in 213 games across all competitions, guiding them to the German Cup title in 2017 and two Super Cups in 2014 and 2015.
Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc said: “Apart from the unpleasant events of recent weeks, we like to remember that the story of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang at Borussia Dortmund for more than four years was a success story.
“He has done great things for Borussia Dortmund at this time, scored many important goals and is part of the team that brought the DFB Cup to Dortmund in 2017.
“We wish Pierre-Emerick all the best for his future at Arsenal,” he added.
The 2015 African footballer of the year becomes the second most expensive African footballer, behind Cédric Bakambu, who joined Beijing Guoan for a fee of €74m.
He becomes Arsenal’s third signing this January, after Konstantinos Mavropanos and Henrikh Mkhitaryan and will link up with his former Dortmund teammate following the arrival of the Armenian from Manchester United earlier this month.
Aubameyang’s replacement at Dortmund will be Chelsea’s Michy Batshuayi, who will join the German club on loan, with Arsenal’s Olivier Giroud heading to the Blues on a permanent basis.
