Augustine Mulenga joined Orlando Pirates over Al Ahly – Report
The Zambian Footballer of the Year has put pen to paper on a three-year contract, joining Orlando Pirates from Zanaco last Tuesday.
And Zanaco chairman Edward Mutale has revealed that Cairo giants Al Ahly were interested in signing the 28-year-old, but the player opted to go to South Africa.
“Yes, it’s true, Al Ahly was one of the teams that were interested in him,” Mutale told KickOff.com.
“The problem with North African teams, sometimes they don’t honour their contracts and our players always struggle to adapt easily that side.
“We believe the environment in the PSL is similar to the one in Zambia. I believe his style of play suits Orlando Pirates.
“We watch the PSL games in Zambia, the competition is fierce. He has to work hard. He is a very good player and we have no doubt he will succeed at Pirates,” he added.
Al Ahly have four foreign players in their squad, meaning they would have sold one of Ali Maaloul, Walid Azaro, Junior Ajayi or Phakamani Mahlambi to sign Mulenga.
