Al Ahly’s Mohamed El-Shenawy reveals his World Cup aspirations

Al Ahly goalkeeper has spoken about his chances of joining the national team ahead of the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

The 29-year-old has been in excellent form with Al Ahly this season keeping eight clean sheets in 14 matches played across all competitions.

Speaking to ON Sport, El-Shenawy talked about how Al Ahly is different than other clubs in the league, saying: “Things are somewhat different in Al-Ahly than any other club in Egypt.

“When you play for a club of Al Ahly’s stature, there is no such thing as a second-choice or a substitute goalkeeper. You always must be ready because at any time you’ll find yourself playing on the pitch.

“This is evident as all three Al Ahly goalkeepers played this season (referring to himself, Sherif Ekramy and Ahmed Adel) so you need to be prepared.

“Other clubs don’t drop their goalkeepers if they make a mistake or two. In Al Ahly however, every mistake you make as a goalkeeper has it’s consequences so you need to be fully focused in every game you play.

“I knew how hard the competition was here before I arrived from Petrojet but I accepted this challenge knowing Al Ahly had goalkeepers as Sherif Ekramy and Ahmed Adel,” he added.

El-Shenawy also praised his head-coach Hossam El-Badry, saying: “I trained with Hossam El-Badry back then when he was an assistant to former manager Manuel José. He [Hossam El-Badry] has a really good character and is very committed to his job.”

The former Petrojet goalkeeper also revealed that he was contacted by the Egyptian national team’s goalkeeping coach Ahmed Nagy, saying: “Ahmed Nagy congratulated me after we won the Egyptian Super Cup against Al-Masry last month.

“Featuring in the World Cup is a dream for any Egyptian player. I am no stranger to the national team because I travelled with them once before.

“It’s more important to get behind the national team regardless of who plays in the World Cup. Everyone will support them and I’ll do my best to get a chance to represent Egypt in Russia this summer,” El-Shenawy concluded.
