Al Masry entered the match in third place with 38 points from 21 games after their 0-0 draw with Tala’a El-Gaish last week. Misr El-Makkasa came in at 13th place with 25 points from 21 games after a 2-2 draw with El Dakhleya last Tuesday.

In the opening stages of the match, El-Makkasa had greater possession. The Fayoum-based side had their first chance of the match as Ahmed Abdel-Zaher headed Paulin Voavy’s wonderful cross, but it went high.

Almost completely against the run of play, Al Masry won a free-kick in a good position. Ahmed Shokry took the free kick which Mohamed Hamdy headed in past Mahmoud Hamdy. Shokry’s goal was his first of the season after assisting two others.

After the goal, Al Masry began to dominate the match. Half-way through the first half, Islam Issa dribbled past El-Makkasa’s players and crossed the ball to Shokry whose resulting shot was high.

Al Masry’s superiority was translated to a second goal in the 32nd minute as a defensive howler from Mostafa Shebeita saw Gomaa receive the ball inside the box and score. Gomaa’s goal was his 11th in the league this season and his 14th across all competitions.

As the second half began, El-Makkasa began to gain more possession but failed to create many chances. Al Masry secured the three points late in the second half as Mohamed Shatta scored his first goal of the season from a great cross from Mohamed Hamdy.

Only seven minutes after the team’s third goal, Al Masry were awarded a penalty which Burkinabe striker Aristide Bancé put past Mahmoud Hamdy. Though he has missed most of the season, the penalty was Bancé’s fifth goal of the season.

In the 91st minute, El-Makkasa were awarded a penalty which was converted by Salah Ashour to give his side a late consolation goal.

The result keeps Al Masry in third place with 41 points from 22 games, just four points off second place Ismaily. El-Makkasa, on the other hand, remain in 13th place, five points away from the regulation zone. The Green Eagles will next face Al Rajaa on February 12, while the Fayoum-based team will face ENPPI two days prior.
