SQUASH: Ali Farag crowned 2018 Swedish Open champion
Farag was triumphant in the tournament’s final after beating in-form Rösner 3-1 [11-7, 6-11, 11-3, 11-5]. The World No.3 had beaten Englishmen Joshua Masters and James Willstrop in the first and second rounds respectively, before defeating New Zeland’s Paul Coll, who eliminated Egypt’s Omar Mosaad, in the semi-finals.
The title is Farag’s first since the US Open, when he was crowned alongside his wife, Nour El Tayeb, who won the women’s title, becoming the first husband and wife in sporting history to win the same major sports title on the same day.
“I’m over the moon to have won the title here at this great event. I’ve heard great things about this event for years and it exceeded all my expectations. It has been a great event,” Farag said.
“Today, after losing the second game I got some great words from Tarek (Momen) so I have to thank him, and my wife and family back home, for their support because without a full team behind me I wouldn’t have been able to do it,” he added.
