Salah, Mane aren’t “out-and-out goalscorers”, says Liverpool legend
Mohamed Salah is Liverpool’s top scorer with 30 goals, Fermino managed to score 21 goals in 37 appearances, while Sadio Mane’s Champions League hat-trick against Porto on Wednesday took his tally to 12.
The Jamaican-born English manager believes that the Reds need an “out-and-out goalscorer” as he is not convinced that the trio will maintain their current form.
“They need better all-round players,” Barnes added. “The front-three are great, but I don’t feel that they are necessarily going to continue to do this for the next two or three years.”
Liverpool are currently third in the Premier League with 54 points, 18 points behind leaders Manchester City and their next game will be against West Ham on Saturday, February 24.
“Salah is not a centre-forward, I don’t think he is a player who can score goals consistently over a period of time. We don’t have players like that,” he said. “We have players like Salah and Mane and, although Mane scored a hat-trick against Porto, they are not out-and-out goalscorers.”
Barnes believes that despite the stunning performances by the attacking line, the team could use a centre-forward or a penalty-box player, and play Firmino slightly deeper.
“I think it will be better for the balance of the team,” he explained. “Yes, we’re scoring lots of goals but can we see Mane and Salah continuing to score this amount of goals on a regular basis? I think we need to get better individual players now.”
