Manuel Jose: Al Ahly were close to signing Salah
Salah came up through Arab Contractors youth ranks and broke through the club’s first team, where he played a total of 44 games and scored 12 assists, before starting his journey abroad with FC Basel.
“Before leaving Al Ahly in my final tenure I called the club president [back then] Hassan Hamdy to sign Salah and his teammate Bassem Ali from Arab Contractors,” Jose told Al Ahly TV.
“He told me few days later that everything has been agreed and only signatures of the players is missing. However, the Egyptian Football Assosication decided to cancel relegation that year, which meant that Contractors will remain in the Egyptian Premier League. This encouraged their club president to reconsider selling Salah.”
The 25-year-old winger is Liverpool’s top scorer this season in all competitions with 31 goals, which is considered the best goal tally in a single season for him.
“Salah was lucky because few months later he began his journey abroad and became one of the best players in Europe. I think if he had joined Al Ahly I would have categorically rejected his departure.”
